Product Description

Along with an eye-catching 2.6-inch OLED screen and smooth, sleek finish, the Nokia N85 mobile phone and multimedia computer provides all the tools you need to roam the globe and stay connected to friends and business colleagues. Assisted GPS shows where you are, the Internet helps you choose your destination, and Nokia Maps guides you along the way. It also boasts N-Gage gaming, digital audio player with a built-in FM transmitter, 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and geotagging capabilities.

The quad-band Nokia N85 GSM/EDGE phone makes it easy to roam globally and stay in touch with voice and text messaging, and this model is also ready to run on 3G networks here in the US (850/1900 MHz HSDPA) as well as those in Europe and Asia (2100 MHz HSDPA), enabling fast downloads and streaming multimedia while on the go. It also includes integrated Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11b/g) for accessing open networks at work, at home, and on the road from a variety of wireless hotspots. You'll also be able to connect to a wide variety of peripherals--including stereo headphones--with the Bluetooth 2.0+EDR capabilities. It's based on S60 software operating on the Symbian OS, enabling you to personalize the N85 by choosing from a wide choice of compatible applications that can be downloaded--including games, navigation, entertainment, and productivity titles.

The Nokia N85 multimedia computer puts the power to share, explore, and entertain in your hands.
This unlocked version of the Nokia N85 can be used with a GSM network service provider and it provides quad-band connectivity (850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz). It does not come with a SIM card, and it requires that you provide a SIM card for usage with your selected service provider. When paired with a compatible 3G network that uses HSDPA 850/1900/2100 MHz connectivity, you'll enjoy a variety of feature-rich wireless services with speeds up to 384 Kbps--from data connectivity to your office to multimedia streaming, and take advantage of simultaneous voice and data services. In the United States, you'll be able to access 850/1900 MHz 3G networks, while the 2100 MHz connectivity allows you to access 3G networks in Europe and Asia. This phone also provides compatibility with EDGE data networks.

Phone Features
The Nokia N85 has an innovative 2.6-inch OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screen that reproduces sharper and brighter colors with better battery consumption. It has a 240 x 320-pixel resolution with support for up to 16 million colors for terrific depth when viewing photos or playing immersive 3D games. The screen also offers Auto UI rotation based on the integrated accelerometer. The innovative 2-way slide concept makes it easy to switch between different modes, going from reading maps to watching a video with a simple slide. A numeric keypad slides out from one end of the device while dedicated media keys slide out from the opposite direction, converting the display into full screen landscape mode. The phone has an internal 78 MB memory, which can be expanded via optional MicroSD memory cards up to 8 GB in size

The Nokia N85 is pre-loaded with several made-for-mobile N-Gage gaming titles that jump off of the screen thanks to the dazzling OLED display and dedicated gaming keys light up when the device is in landscape gaming mode to further enhance the action-packed experience.

The phone actually has two cameras, a high-resolution, 5-megapixel camera on the back of the device and a lower resolution camera on the front (352 x 288 pixels-pixel resolution) on the front of the phone for video calls (requires network compatibility). The main camera on the back of the N85 supports an image capture resolution of 2584 x 1938 pixels. You can use both cameras to take still pictures and record videos.

The still camera has a 20x digital zoom, center weighted auto exposure, white balance controls, light sensitivity modes, multiple scene modes (including portrait, landscape, sport, and night). The Carl Zeiss Tessar lens has a 5.45mm focal length and a focus range as close as 10cm. (The Zeiss name has been associated with cameras from Hasselblad, Rollei, Yashica, Sony, and Nikon.) The dual LED flash offers several modes (on, off, automatic, and red-eye reduction) and it has an operating range of 10 feet. Other features include a full-screen viewfinder, dedicated camera key, built-in photo editor, and direct printing to compatible printers. Further, with the integrated A-GPS, you can now "geotag" pictures with location data and share them with online communities.

A state-of-the-art 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and bright dual LED flash captures clear, sharp images.

A built-in FM transmitter lets the Nokia N85 play wirelessly through a car or home stereo.
The main lens also captures DVD-like quality video at 30 frames per second and VGA resolution (640 x 480 pixels). It features an 8x digital zoom, image stabilization, multiple recording file formats (mp4, .3gp; H.263, H.264), video white balance modes, and a built-in video editor. Clip length is capped at 90 minutes. The lens on the front can capture video at up to 352 x 288 pixels (CIF) and up to 15 fps, and it has a 2x digital zoom.

Build a personal music collection from the millions of tracks and playlists available from the Nokia Music Store or other online music vendors, or synchronize PC and mobile music libraries via USB cable. Alternatively, you can enjoy FM radio (with RDS) or a wide selection of stations via the internet. The 3.5 mm audio jack makes connecting a top-quality headset simple and a built-in FM transmitter lets the Nokia N85 play wirelessly through a car or home stereo.

This smartphone has an integrated Wi-Fi LAN (802.11b/g), enabling seamless connectivity with wireless networks at work, at home, and on the roam via Wi-Fi hotspots at airports and coffee shops. Because the N96 is Bluetooth enabled (with version 2.0+EDR), wireless communication headsets can be configured with the phone for total hands-free operation. It also offers Bluetooth stereo audio support (A2DP), enabling you to enjoy your music without any wires. If your laptop is Bluetooth enabled, you can connect wirelessly and enjoy dial-up networking (DUN)--surf the Internet, send email, and access files from a server.

With A-GPS functionality, you'll be able find your route quickly and easily, whether walking or driving (A-GPS is a network dependant feature that requires a data plan; additional charges may apply). The Nokia Maps application offers richer maps with urban details and satellite views and the ability to search and download information about points of interests, such as restaurants, hotels, companies, travel agencies, airports, and more. It also provides optional upgrades such as City Guides, turn-by-turn pedestrian mode and voice-guided car navigation.

The N85 has all the bases covered when it comes to messaging. Support is built in for sending and receiving text, video, graphics and sound via messages. It also enables you to check your email on the go (supporting POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP protocols). T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit--a plus for mobile text messaging users.

View web pages as they were originally intended with the integrated Nokia Web Browser, which enables you to zoom out to a full screen view of the entire page using the Mini Map feature. Find the section you want and then zoom in to the content you need. The text instantly adjusts to the size of your screen. The browser also keeps a history of your browsing so you can quickly get back to where you started.

Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) technology means that this Nokia phone will discover, interact with, and control other compatible home electronic devices. This includes PCs, media centers, home entertainment systems, new smart appliances, home automation systems, networked peripherals, and Web-based services. With compatible equipment, you can stream video from your Nokia device directly to your TV, or hear music tracks stored on your PC through your living room's sound system.

can nokia deliver non working phones ?

This one star goes to Nokia as a company, not to the phone because I did not have the chance to use it. It came unusable from factory!.
Also, five stars to Amazon because they have a really great return policy and easy to follow procedures.

I still cannot believe that a big company like Nokia does not have a quality test on its production line to avoid things like this from happening.

The phone was delivered by Amazon but the seller was Nokia itself. It came on a sealed package, and after putting in and charging the battery, the display did not work.

At the beginning, I though I was dumb enough to not understand how to power on the phone. But after a few tests and talking with Nokia support, it was clear that the phone worked, but the display did not.
I was able to hear it play music, and to take pictures with flash, just pushing buttons blindly.

Although phone functionalities looks great, this experience has taken away the trust I had on Nokia. Having today so many choices to buy a cell phone with great functionalities and design from a variety of companies, I will put my money and confidence on companies who takes customer experience a little bit seriously.
Good phone, but not impressed

Reviewer: M. Li,
I've been wanting one of these phones (or other similar models) ever since it came out. Since it was pretty expensive at the beginning, I waited, when I finally had it in my hands this Christmas I was not impressed. Don't get me wrong, it's a good phone--very fast at processing, duel sliding, well finished exterior, EXCELLENT camera (something I wish to have on my iPhone), and clear calls. But the software wasn't very intuitive, sometimes difficult to find certain functions. Buttons weren't all that easy to press on, wish can be charged by USB. If you are looking for a phone for basic features like MP3, take some pictures, and excellent reception with clear speakerphone, then this is for you, but then you probably could get something much cheaper or free from your carrier.
Super

Reviewer: W. James,
I've had the phone for six months and am completely satisfied. I'm amazed at the number or features
in this small package. All the features work as advertised except the FM transmitter in my 4Runner, probably because the car's antenna is, I believe, in the back glass. I moved up from a n75 which had terrible battery life; the N85 is, maybe,
five times better.
On a side note, I dropped the phone and it would no longer charge. I thought the phone was out
of warranty, but on calling NokiaUSA to see about getting it repaired, it wasn't. They immediately
eMailed me a UPS shipping label and directions. I took the bare phone to a UPS store and they took
it packaged it and sent it on its way. One week later a new phone showed up at my door. No money out of my pocket. In the future I'll need a real good reason to buy any other brand of phone. Also, the replacement's fit is about the same. That is to say, there is a small amount of play in the slider parts.
Of course, there has to be some play for parts to slide under different temperature conditions.
I don't find this a problem.
"Fail" sums it up nicely

I really wanted to love the Nokia N85. But after 6 months of using this phone, all I can think of is the many ways it has failed me.

I bought the phone for it's all-in-one features, phone, email, gps, music player, camera, games, even the FM radio. Just about every one of those features has not lived up to expectations. I brought the phone on my honeymoon in Europe to take pictures and video, use the internet when I had wifi, and watch some movies during my downtime on trains and planes. Unfortunately about halfway through the trip, my memory card somehow became corrupt and all my videos were gone. By the end of the trip, just about all the images and videos I took over the two weeks had been lost. Just gone, *poof*. Luckily I was able to retrieve the images using a windows program to retrieve lost images from a corrupt memory card, but the videos are gone forever.

The music player is nice when it works, but it too somehow became corrupt, and none of my music appears in my library any longer. The only way to play those songs is to use the file browser to navigate to the folder where the song is saved and play each song individually.

Sometimes the phone gets in a state where it will not make any calls from the contacts list or recent calls. The only way to dial is to manually type in a number -- the only way to fix this is to reboot. The most fundamental feature of this device, making calls, is broken. Go figure.

I downloaded the trial for Age of Empires III through N-gage to try out the gaming features of the phone. After I played the game and exited, I could not launch any other application on the phone until I rebooted.

The camera flash is so incredibly bright that if I take a picture of anyone, they are always squinting. (The flash comes on before the shutter in order to focus).

The one bright spot of this phone is the quality of the video recordings. They are very sharp and clear, with good stabilisation to make up for shaky hands. The rest of the device is just one disappointment after another. Nokia needs to do a way better job of quality control and testing of their firmware before releasing a product like this.
